Donald Trump's decisive victory in the United States has led to fears in American allies that they cannot count on American support if a war were to happen. A political analyst in South Korea, Cheong Seong-Chang has advised that South Korea gain nuclear weapons of their own. His belief is that the United States, under a Trump presidency cannot be relied on or trusted to help their allies in case of a war. In South Korea's case they have an aggressive neighbor called North Korea who recently has called off any peaceful reunification with the South. North Korea has nuclear weapons, so South Korea gaining some as very well might lead to mutually assured destruction between the two. It could also work as deterrence against an invasion by the North, who would know that Seoul would have the capabilities of striking anywhere in the country. This might affect relations with Japan adversely, as the Japanese people have a large anti-nuclear weapon sentiment in the nation and having another nation within striking range of their land will upset the people that have dealt with two nuclear weapons.
