Examining the 2024 Election Results

The 2024 election cycle was by far the most consequential in recent U.S. history.

Clearly, this year saw a Republican landslide in all three election types: Presidential, Senatorial, and the House of Representatives.

Donald J. Trump, the Republican candidate, won the presidency decisively with an electoral college majority of 312 to Kamala D. Harris' 226. Trump flipped the Blue Wall states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, as well as the critical swing states of Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada. He also maintained the crucial swing state of North Carolina, which he held by a small margin back in 2020. In other states, he improved his margins, contributing to his historic lead in the popular vote, making blue states like New York, New Jersey, and Illinois much more Republican.

In the Senate, Republicans obtained their largest victory of the night. Already having a very favorable election map, they flipped four Senate seats, which included West Virginia, Ohio, Montana, and Pennsylvania. The Republican flip of Pennsylvania, expected to go blue, showed Republicans' gains in the Rust Belt. They also came very close to winning in Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona, and Nevada.

The House was much more competitive, with Republicans expected to hold their narrow majority by an even narrower margin. Democrats made gains in New York as the Lee Zeldin wave subsides, while Republicans flipped a few seats in Michigan and Pennsylvania. Mike Johnson will most likely remain speaker as a result.

Gubernatorial elections this year went both ways, with Democrats maintaining their governorship in North Carolina by a near safe margin, while Republicans held on in the blue states of Vermont and New Hampshire.
